Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. I was doing some studying and came to a conclusion that faith has two sides. One is loyalty to a person or fidelity to a promise and the second is confidence in the word or assurance of another. Faith is not just some simple thing we believe but it is the very object we choose to believe in. We often here the words “object of affection” I encourage you to think about what is the object of your faith. We so simply let our everyday lives be the center of our faith. We substitute friendships and things we do for the very most important thing, Christ.

Paul warned the Romans not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2). He also told the Philippians to focus on what ever was true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable (Philippians 4:8). One thing that amazes me is that all these things when looked at closely have Christ in common. Yes it sounds simple. The truth is consistent with the facts. Nobility considers having high moral values. Being right involves being free of error, conforming to the facts. Being pure means being free of unlike qualities. Lovely is something that appeals to the emotions as well as the eyes, it is lovable in a childlike or naïve way. When I look at these things I see that to be right we must conform to the facts, these means having truth. To have truth we must remain pure and not dilute our faith. To be able to do this we must raise to a new standard, we have to be honorable. How can we do all this, we can do it with simple childlike faith.

It’s amazing to me that what Paul wrote to the Philippians is still true today as it was back then. So what is faith? Faith is Trusting in Christ, depending on the truth, His word and believing that we are redeemed through the work of the cross.

PUERTO RICAN MEDICAL DISORDERS (Enjoy!!!)

Monga:

Mysterious body temperature, not high enough to be considered fever, but serious enough to miss school and work. Illness is unknown by the American Medical Association (AMA) and only understood by doctors of Puerto Rican origin.

Patatú:

Attack of obscure origin that can strike at any time. Could be serious enough to require hospitalization, yet is undetected by medical technology. Victims tend to be males and females over the age of 50 years.

Sereno:

Occurs when someone steps outdoors suddenly at night and is sprinkled by a mysterious substance produced by the night air. There are no physical symptoms and it can only be detected by the Puerto Rican elderly. The effect of having this disease is unknown. Children must not be taken out at night without proper head gear or risk of contamination is certain.

Empache:

Digestive disorder which occurs after the consumption of a large Puerto Rican meal. The only known cure for this disease is "una buena criolla" or "tirarse un buen gas" (burp). (Alka-Seltzer is completely ineffective).

Cuerpo Cortao:

Frequent and mild condition of unknown etiology. Symptoms include but are not limited to fatigue, lack of energy and chronic whining.

Moño Parao:

Psychological imbalance of short duration that causes strange mood swings, violent irritating behavior as well as general unpleasantness.

Cocotazo:

Also referred to as the "Fuácata". A clenched /closed cripple! Caused by left or right fingers flexed to not quite make a fist with middle finger slightly raised higher than the rest and delivered to a child's headwith a quick snap to the wrist (my father's favorite).

Chichón:

Elevated cranial protrusion usually caused by the fall after a patatú. Can also be caused by the sudden or unexpected encounter with a cocotazo.

¡If you don't remember these you're not a typical Puerto Rican! ¡Enjoy!
